It’s not easy to find a compact smartphone in 2022. At a time of ever-larger screen diagonals for consuming multimedia content, there is still a market for smaller mobiles. Manufacturers have understood this and often offer a compact alternative to some of their flagship models. Here is our selection of the best small format mobiles.
1. Apple iPhone 13 Mini
The iPhone 13 mini is an excellent smartphone, and we highly recommend it to those who don’t already have an iPhone 12 mini in their pocket. Indeed the differences with the latter are too marginal to merit a purchase. Unless battery life and low-light photo quality are that important to you.
Because these are the main advantages of this new iPhone. The battery is more generous, and the quality of the images takes another leap forward thanks to a wide-angle sensor directly inherited from the iPhone 12 Pro Max.
The best smartphone on the market for video, the iPhone 13 also allows you to have fun with the new cinematic mode which, if still imperfect, lets’s imagine pretty things for the future. In short, you will have understood: it is a success on all points or almost. In this case, the reduction in the size of the notch does not really change the situation, so at this rate, we can only wait for its disappearance pure and simple.

2. Xiaomi 12
The Xiaomi 12 is certainly a very attractive smartphone, which convinces with its stylish design and its compact size ideal for everyday use.
Still, we have to keep our feet on the ground: yes, the Xiaomi 12 is an excellent smartphone, both in terms of performance and autonomy and for its screen, but nothing – absolutely nothing – justifies a price increase of 150 € compared to its predecessor.
And yes, in fact, the Xiaomi 12 does not offer such a different service from the Xiaomi Mi 11. It has the same qualities and suffers from the same faults. What fundamentally changes is it is smaller diagonal. However, we are not sure that this is seen as progress by everyone.
In the end, we fall into the same traps here as for the Xiaomi 12 Pro. In either case, they are excellent mobiles, but not at the price that Xiaomi is asking for.
However, if you were to crack them, rest assured: we had a lot of fun testing them and these two models remain highly recommended. Except perhaps for very demanding photographers.

3. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3
We didn’t have much to complain about the Galaxy Z Flip last year. More attractive than a Fold in our eyes, it only caught on with its totally anecdotal secondary screen, its very fair autonomy and its exorbitant price. And this year, Samsung fixes at least two of the three complaints.
The new front screen is finally usable, and the Galaxy Z Flip 3 is displayed for nothing less than 500€ cheaper than its predecessor. There remains indeed a largely perfectible autonomy. But it is clear that Samsung is developing a certain expertise in the design of these smartphones of a new kind.
The Galaxy Z Flip 3 is a magnetic device that is hard to put down and fun to handle. Admittedly, it does not revolutionize uses as the Fold hopes to do one day. But it allows in any case to reconcile compact dimensions and XXL screen. A successful bet.
4. Apple iPhone SE 2022
It’s obvious: Apple is starting to pull the strings with its iPhone SE 2022. The design of the phone is very dated. And even if it is very durable, both externally and on the software side, we would appreciate if the manufacturer did not just recycle.
That being said, it’s hard to be tough on the iPhone SE. Yes, its screen is LCD, HD+ and 60 Hz. But damn it is well-calibrated! And the Apple A15 Bionic which the team simply does wonders in terms of performance. It’s simple: to find such a fast Android phone, you have to pay more than 800 €.
Admittedly, the iPhone SE may seem anachronistic on many points. Whether it’s its design, its screen or its unique camera, everything takes us back in time. But as a gateway to the world of iOS, this new model manages to offer a complete and satisfying experience. We could have done without the price increase attributable to 5G, but we will be magnanimous this time. Hoping that the next model will reshuffle the cards a little more.
5. Asus Zenfone 8
Asus has embarked on a risky bet this year. But he also made sure to put all the chances on his side. Yes, the Zenfone 8 is a compact smartphone. But it is also a top-of-the-range smartphone, which certainly does not demerit in terms of its performance or the quality of its screen.
Of course, it’s not the sexiest device on the market. A little simplistic, it also lacks audacity on the photo side… But in the end, we can’t fault it in terms of quality.
The only downside? Its autonomy. A bit tight, the smartphone battery will rarely accompany you for more than a full day. A compromise to keep in mind when purchasing, even if for the price Asus is asking for, the Zenfone 8 is still a very good deal.
6. Google Pixel 4a
We were looking forward to the Pixel 4a. Google has corrected some problems with the Pixel 3a by giving its new model a more modern design that has nothing to envy the competition. Its compact size and light weight make it a very pleasant smartphone to handle on a daily basis. The OLED screen, although not 90Hz, is also of high quality. And what about the single photo sensor which, still in 2020, gives a lesson to most of the on-board modules of its mid-range competitors.
But the Google Pixel 4a still drags a few balls from the past. The biggest being its autonomy. Admittedly, the screen of the smartphone is smaller than those of its competitors, but the size of the battery changes little, and Google is unable to optimize the energy consumption of its own OS to offer more than a day of autonomy. on his phone.
Subdued performance, the lack of customization of the interface and features not compatible with the language of Molière also weigh on our final assessment of the phone. The Google Pixel 4a, it is nonetheless a very pleasant smartphone to use on a daily basis.
