Alleged iOS 16 Features

Design changes in the status bar

With rumors surrounding the new iPhone series hitting the market un-notched, the iOS UI will have some room for creativity. Reportedly,  Apple will ditch the rectangular notch on the iPhone 14 Pro and bring the fist-shaped notch to its signature phones for the first time.

A small hole for the front camera also means more space for changes in the layout of the top of the iPhone, perhaps even bringing the most anticipated battery percentage to the status bar.

Emergency satellite functions

One of the most intriguing rumors related to the  iPhone 13 series was to come with a satellite communication system . Do you remember? As we all know, that didn’t happen, so industry rumors are now that Apple is planning to bring the Satellite Emergency feature to the iPhone 14 lineup.

It’s uncertain if this can be mentioned as a future feature of iOS 16 since the ability to use a satellite communication system will likely depend on bespoke hardware, but some tech media are considering the possibility. With this, iPhones would be able to send emergency messages (or more) when there is no cellular coverage.

New VR/AR integrations

We are all very excited about Apple Glass, mainly because the company has been working on this project for quite some time now. But what’s even more special is that Apple has already shown some cool and innovative approaches with virtual and augmented reality features built into iOS.

It’s true that we still don’t know if Apple Glass will see the light of day in 2022, but Tim Cook certainly has plans to build a bigger and better ecosystem of VR/AR apps and games. And since iPhones will likely support some integration with smart glasses, we expect new features in the operating system to support it.

Interactive widgets

Since iOS 14, widgets have played a bigger role in the operating system’s user interface. With iOS 15, Apple introduced a slew of new widgets for popular Apple apps and services . And now, with iOS 16, expectations go beyond design and functional shortcuts, iOS widgets should also be smarter with more interactive options.

For example, currently the Apple Music widget shows the album image, music and artist name, but you can’t really navigate between tracks or quickly switch between albums. . In short, it only works as a shortcut to the Music app. With interactive widgets, you can perform more actions without leaving the home screen.

A New UI Experience: From Always-on-Display to Split Screen

It’s been a while since Apple revamped the iOS experience. Last year, Google decided to bring a new concept to Android 12 and introduced Material You, a more colorful and diversely shaped user interface, so many fans think it’s time for Apple to shake things up a bit. ‘user interface.

In this area, a concept that has obtained more than a million views on YouTube seems to have all the fans who have been asking for a while now. Features like always-on display, split-screen, and a redesigned control center have been brought together in the concept video below.

On the other hand, however, Apple doesn’t give as much freedom as Google when it comes to customization, so it’s possible that many users who rely on a design overhaul will be disappointed.

That’s all we know about iOS 16 rumours, leaks, and expectations so far. In the coming weeks and months, we’ll likely see a lot more leaks do the rounds of the internet, and we’ll update this roundup article.

iOS 16 release date

Even though Apple still hasn’t confirmed the exact days of its 32nd annual Worldwide Developers Conference, iOS 16 is expected to be announced at WWDC 2022 in June. As we’ve seen over the past few years, the developer beta (for registered app developers only) is expected to be released right after the conference. We will then have the opportunity to test it and share our first impressions with the NextPit community.

Over the months following the beta phase – including the public beta – the next generation of iOS will be tweaked, patched and updated until we get a stable version of iOS 16. The official release should be available for everyone in September 2022, at the same time as the release of a new line of iPhones.

Devices compatible with iOS 16

When it comes to software updates, Apple is the brand to look up to. By the time iOS 15 was officially released, even the 2015 iPhone 6s series received the OS update. However, iPhone 6s and iPhone SE  (1st Gen) are rumored to not receive any updates from 2022 due to critical A9 and A9X chip limitations, for which Apple is withdrawing support.

Conclusion

Apple’s popularity has grown over the past few months. According to Counterpoint Research’s January 2022 monthly report  , “Apple has sold the most iPhones in a single year since its inception”, partly due to Apple’s strongest growth in China since October 2021 , thus filling the void left by Huawei in the country due to the ongoing US sanctions.

Overall, this means the number of iPhone owners across the planet has never been greater, putting some pressure for what’s new on iOS 16. Since 2020, Apple’s software engineers haven’t invested in big visual changes, and it’s high time for that to happen. With the introduction of Widgets, the company has given users more customization options, providing a way to customize the interface of iOS, but it still lags behind Android.
