Rapidly Expanding Black Hole Discovered

Astronomers have identified a rapidly growing black hole at the beginning of the universe, which is thought to be an important missing link between the young stellar galaxies and the first supermassive black holes.

Astronomers used data from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope to make the discovery.

So far, the so-called GNz7q has been hidden in the most studied part of the sky, the GOODS-North field.

With the help of archival Hubble data from Hubble’s advanced camera for the survey, the team determined that GNz7q came into being 750 million years after the Big Bang.

The team found evidence that GNz7q is a newly formed black hole. Hubble found a solid source of ultraviolet and infrared light.

The light is not emitted from galaxies, but from materials that fall into black holes.

The presence of increasingly large black holes in dusty, early stellar galaxies was predicted in theories and computer simulations, but has not yet been observed.
