Windows 11 Home Vs Windows 11 Pro

Let’s find out the differences between Windows 11 Pro and Windows 11 Home to understand which edition is best for your PC

Windows 11 has brought many innovations in terms of interface and functionality but has maintained the subdivision into versions as seen on Windows 10: we can in fact benefit from both Windows 11 Home and Windows 11 Pro , which apparently look similar but have differences. of a certain magnitude, which force users to stop for a moment before installing one version over the other.

In the following guide we will show you what are the differences between Windows 11 Home and Windows 11 Pro , we will show you how to check the version of Windows 11 in use and finally how to switch from one version to another if we have already installed a specific version of Windows, considering also that we can’t choose the version if we upgraded from Windows 10.

Differences between Windows 11 Home and Windows 11 Pro

Although graphically the two systems are indistinguishable, the differences are present under the hood and it is possible to notice them if we start using Windows for complex operations (such as working or studying).

System requirements

The first differences can already be seen in the requirements that the systems are able to manage : Windows 11 Home supports a single CPU (up to 64 cores) and a maximum RAM memory of 128 GB, while with Windows 11 Pro it is possible to install and manage two CPUs (each with a maximum of 64 cores, for a total of 128 cores) and up to 2 TB of RAM installed.

Obviously we are talking about very high RAM and CPU values and difficult to find in the home environment, but in the business and workstation environment, things could change very soon, making Windows 11 Pro the ideal choice for companies.

Another function present only on Windows 11 Pro is BitLocker , the encryption tool that can encrypt the drive volume or USB sticks using 128 or 256 bit AES encryption and also taking advantage of the computer’s TPM chip (which many will remember being one of the basic requirements of Windows 11).

On Windows 11 Home it is not possible to take advantage of BitLocker , even if a basic cryptographic system is integrated to protect the entire disk where the system is installed (accessible from Settings -> Privacy and security -> Device encryption ).

Local accounts

This is the first noticeable difference even at home: Windows 11 Home only supports Microsoft accounts for access , it is not possible to create a local account (i.e. without access to the Microsoft account). The Redmond company has focused heavily on this feature, so as to make computers less subject to attacks and violations: with the Microsoft account installed, access is encrypted and based on Internet access and it is no longer possible to use the systems password recovery .

On Windows 11 Pro it is still possible to create a local account , since in the business environment it may be necessary to have quick access or emergency access with a local administrator account, although Microsoft still pushes for the use of the Microsoft account even in company making the installation of the local account very difficult.

Remote Desktop

Another function that appears differently based on the version of Windows 11 in use is Remote Desktop , which is the function that allows you to control Windows PCs remotely .

On Windows 11 Home it is possible to use Remote Desktop Connection to access computers available on the network for remote control, but we cannot control the same PC (which has the Home version).

On Windows 11 Pro it is not only possible to use Remote Desktop Connection but we can also control the same computer remotely , thus obtaining full functionality. This makes it clear that, if we want to control a PC remotely, it must have Windows 11 Pro installed or we will be forced to use another remote control app (such as TeamViewer ).

If we have Windows 11 Home and want to have our computer remotely controlled by an expert friend or a technician, we recommend that you use the Windows Quick Assistance app , so that we can immediately provide remote access to our computer without having to go through Remote Desktop.

Advanced tools

On Windows 11 Pro we also find other very powerful administrative functions, which obviously are missing on Windows 11 Home: Group Policy , integration with Microsoft Azure, advanced access to a domain, dynamic provisioning, kiosk mode, support for Hyper-V and Windows Sandbox virtual machines .

These functions are really very useful in a business environment but are superfluous on a home PC or on a PC designed to surf the Internet or to watch streaming movies: Microsoft has decided to remove them from the Home version to make the system light and practical, without too many tinsel.

How to check the version in use

If we already have Windows 11 but we do not know what version we are using at the moment we can check immediately by opening the Start menu, pressing on Settings , opening the System menu and finally pressing on the System Information menu , where you can find information about the version in use in the Windows Specifications section .

If we have updated to Windows 11 starting from Windows 10 , we will keep the same version on the new operating system we had on the old system : those who start with Windows 10 Pro will immediately have Windows 11 Pro, just as those who started from Windows 10 Home will find themselves installed Windows 11 Home.

How to upgrade from Home to Pro

If Windows 11 Pro has interesting features and we want to upgrade our copy of Windows 11 Home we can do it at any time, but we will have to charge an additional fee for the license change (€ 145 more).

To proceed with the update from Windows 11 Home to Windows 11 Pro, open the Start menu, go to Settings , press the System menu , open the Activation menu , expand the Update the Windows edition section and finally press Open the Store .

The window dedicated to the change of version will open immediately: to change the license, all we have to do is click on Buy and use one of the payment methods registered on the Microsoft account to proceed. At the end of the purchase, the license will be immediately installed on the PC in use, which will proceed to install the missing components (a restart will be required to complete the procedure).

If we already have a Windows 11 Pro product key (also available on Amazon for less than € 20 ) we can update by taking us back to the Settings -> System -> Activation path , expanding again the Update Windows edition section and pressing this time on Change next to Change Product Key .

In the new window we enter the Product Key in our possession, we confirm and await the installation of the new components, so that we can use Windows 11 Pro and all its functions.

Windows 11 Home is the ideal version for those who use the computer a few times a day, presenting all the functions to navigate, study and also perform most of the work tasks that can be done from home . We will hardly miss the additional features, considering that we will still have to shell out some money to change the license.

Vice versa, Windows 11 Pro is an obligatory choice for those who use the PC in work offices, since it has a series of functions that can come in handy sooner or later, especially if we set up a domain network or use group policies to block access to some functions or some menus. If we are the managers of the company or the IT part, we only install Windows 11 Pro or proceed with the update, perhaps even using the multi-license keys (typical of business environments).

We remind you that it is not possible to switch for free from Windows 10/11 Home to Windows 11 Pro without first changing and purchasing the new license. Before switching to Windows 11, you can buy a Windows 10 and 11 Pro license on Amazon at discounted prices and you can then change Product Key on Windows in a very simple way.
